Spartolus pugionatus Stål

Researchers from the CHED funded research program namely Mohagan AB, Leaño EP, Melencion MG, Patano Jr. RR, Hongco AL & VB Amoroso, documented a rare species of pygmy grasshopper Spartolus pugionatus Stål, 1877 endemic to Mindanao.

The researchers provide the very first annotated records of the species specifically at the central part of the island of Mindanao, mountainous tropical rainforests of Marilog District, Davao City. The researchers propose its English name as “Mindanao Yellow-Striped Giraffehopper”.

Giraffehoppers is name used for other ophiotettegini members, referring to their elongated head. Yellow-Striped refers to color of the species, while Mindanao refers to the island the species is inhabiting.
