e-CEBREM New Discovery

Researchers from the CHED funded research program namely Mohagan AB, Patano Jr. RR, Leaño EP, Melencion MG, Coritico FP &  VB Amoroso, documented a rare species of pygmy grasshopper Diotarus verrucifer Stål, 1877 endemic to Mindanao.

The researchers provide the very first annotated records of the species specifically at the mountainous tropical rainforests of Marilog District, Davao City and Mount Agad-agad, Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. The researchers updated its description and provided a more comprehensive morphometric data of the species. The researchers propose its English name as “Mindanao helmed  pygmy grasshopper”.

“Helmed” refers to their anterior margin of pronotum that looks like a helmet, while “Mindanao” refers to the island the species is inhabiting.
